Let's Get In to It... Get it? Like Get in To Clothes?
Excuse my cheesy puns.. Hello and welcome to today's blog.
One of the most common questions I get before a photoshoot is, "what should we wear???" I am totally there with you! My normal outfit for the day is yoga pants and sweatshirts. I am all about comfort. It's a big deal around here if I am wearing a real shirt and jeans. My husband's like, "Whoa, where you going?" lol. No shame here. A reminder that this blog is geared towards Family Sessions!
Comfortable = Confidence
So. Here's the secret... whatEVER you decide to wear to your photoshoot, you want to be comfortable. Now, I'm not saying go as far as yoga pants and sweatshirts. But what I am saying is comfort = confidence. It makes a huge difference. You don't want to be worrying about your outfit and worrying where your hands need to rest at the same time. It's too much, darling. (Anyone remember Edna in the Incredibles???)
Rule of Thumb - Start with You
My rule of thumb is start with yourself and work through the family. What season is it? Okay, go look up on Pinterest "*insert season* photoshoot outfit ideas." Prepare to be inspired. But I want you to keep one thing in mind: All of those pictures on Pinterests are the best of the best. They may be photoshopped. The may have changed hues. They may have added lighting. They may have had their hair and makeup professionally done. It may be a styled shoot. Your goal is not to look like those people, but be inspired by color schemes, textures, and accessories such as hats, scarves, jewelry, and SHOES! Ok, I'm not against tennis shoes, but, I promise you, your pictures will look three notches better if tennis shoes are not present.
Back to my rule of thumb. Start with yourself and work through the family. Find a color scheme you are in love with that you either, already have in your closet or can do MINIMAL shopping for. When I say minimal, I mean don't go buying brand new outfits for everyone in the family. It's stressful. I mean.. if that's what makes you happy and you can confidently do it, I support you!! But chances are, we can throw something together with stuff you already own. Maybe go buy that shirt you saw at Old Navy the other day though.... ;) shhh. I won't saying anything.
Mix it Up
Okay, you have found your color scheme you want to strive for. Best practice is the parents shirts will be a couple of the main colors (not the same colors). So let's say it's fall and you want an earthy classic fall theme. Mom can wearing a cream color sweater and Dad can wear a gray sweater. Now I LOVE jeans. But! Try to avoid everyone wearing the same color jeans. So, maybe Mom wears blue jeans and Dad wears Khakis. Alternate between colors between the kids. An idea might be that the girls match Mom and the boys match Dad. Or the youngest matches Mom and older kids (closely!) match each other.
What to avoid
Avoid lots of black and lots of white. These colors can be easily blown out in pictures and do not carry a lot of detail. Avoid pinstripes and closely dotted patterns. These can cause affects called moire and it will not print well.
Actually... I take it all back.
Ha! Just kidding. But, here's the kicker. All this being said, someone might say the complete opposite!! Okay? Look, the bottom line is, it's up to you. These are just guidelines to help my families choose a great option for their photos. Don't like my suggestions? That's TOTALLY okay. You do you! At the end of the day, you are the one who will be looking at these photos and I want YOU to be happy. That's it. Your happiness is what I strive for.
